This is Just Legitimising Spam, Laziness and Apathy

Sometimes I am gobsmacked at some of the terrible ideas that people come up with on the internet. There are some ideas which are terrible because they are pathetic. There are other ideas which are terrible because they just haven’t been thought out. And then there are ideas like WordPressDirect (which I will not grace with a link) which are terrible because they go against everything the social web is all about and pander to those people too lazy and apathetic to actually contribute, but still greedy enough to want to try and benefit out of the work of others.

This site claims that it grabs content and comments from all over the web to automatically create an aggregated site of content, and all you have to do (yes, you Mr Spammer) is plug in a few keywords, put your advertising up and then sit back in your plastic garden chair and wait for the profits to pile in. You don’t ever have to update it (it’s OK, all of those other sad bloggers are out there posting original content for you to use indisciminantly – let them do the work), you don’t have to bother with maintaining your site (pah! that just gets in the way of making money) and the site produced is one your visitors “will love”.

As Dave Fleet says “no, visitors won’t love your blog. They’ll hate it, because it’s a spam blog…”

Well said. And how true.

Long time readers of this blog will know the scorn in which I hold anyone who seeks to ‘make money from the internet’ by doing as little work possible. And sites like this simply encourage this nefarious behaviour. And, they also make a mockery of the hours and hours of hard work which real bloggers and content generators put in. They encourage parasites, and therefore, in my mind, ought to be stopped.

I don’t know if I even need to say it, but what makes the internet such an incredible place to be is the fact that so many people contribute so much of their time, knowledge and life to it. People’s thoughts and views on a topic vary so much – it is fascinating to read and discover these opinions. I love finding new, interesting content because not only have I learned something new, I have found a new person who interests me.

What do sites like this poorly veiled spam producer offer me? Stolen content and a destruction of the ethos which makes the web a great place to be.

For anyone considering using this site, think again. Think about why you are launching a blog. If you are launching a blog to build an audience, try and establish some influence, and add to the global library of information on the web, then do yourself a favour and write your own blog. Your opinions and ideas matter and we want to hear them. If you are launching a blog to try and make money with as little effort possible, then do us a favour. Turn off the computer now and walk away. We don’t need that kind of site clogging up our bandwidth.

Nice one. I have stumbled and twittered this for my friends. My friends will enjoy reading it also.
  • I agree, so many bad apples ruin the good hard work that many of us put in to do things the right way.
  • Have faith, Nancy. The Real will win out over the trash, I'm convinced. Real people interacting beats AdSense-frenzy 'botSpam any day. And it's getting easier to spot the Real from the junk. Unless - and here's the bit that worries me - you're 18.
